The Atherton Raspberry is a wild tropical raspberry species native to Papua New Guinea and Australia. The vine is upright in habit forming small thickets and exhibits low thorniness in comparison to most Rubus species. The leaves are compound and it produces showy white flowers before the tasteless edible red berry. Berries are said to have medicinal compounds and have been used to help cancer patients. Used widely by the native Australian Aboriginals as an important Bush Food Tucker. Red berries look great in salads for added striking colour.
It has been commercially cultivated to a limited extent in Australia as a cool season punnet fruit

Weed Risk : There is concern that R. probus could become a rampant environmental weed, similar to blackberry, when grown outside of its natural range.
