The Rollinia is a species in the custard-apple family, Annonaceae, that is native to tropic South America.
It is cultivated for its delicious edible fruits, commonly known as biribá, lemon meringue pie fruit, or wild sugar-apple & aratiku.
The fruits are known to be in the middle between Custard Apple and the Soursop.
Rollinia is a fast-growing, flood-tolerant, sun-loving tropical tree. It can reach a height of 4–15 m. Takes only 3-4 years to bear fruit when grown from seed.
As the name suggests " Deliciosia" the fruits are large, round with soft spikes & yellow when ripe . The fruit pulp is very soft and sweet, light white to translucent coloured, tasting somewhat like a Lemon Meringue Pie. It is mostly eaten fresh also used in cooking, and wine in Brazil.
Its surface is covered with soft spines which bruise and blacken with handling, giving it an unappealing appearance. This fruit is very delicate and with a short shelf life of less than a week from harvest, it has limited its commercial cultivation. However, it is an very popular tree for home gardeners & small orchardists for cultivation of fresh fruit.
